What to do right now
Stay warm and stay put. Do not force the door with a credit card, a screwdriver or your shoulder: a pried frame or a broken window costs more than the lockout, and a damaged strike turns a ten-minute opening into a lock replacement. Check the other doors and windows once, calmly. Then call. Have a piece of ID with your address, or be ready to show a lease or a bill on your phone. A legitimate locksmith must confirm you belong there before opening, and one who does not ask is not someone you want holding your key.
Before you call, and where to stop
Where DIY stops: if the key turns but the door will not open, the latch or a swollen door is the likely cause, and you can safely lift the door by the handle while turning. If the key will not turn at all, stop. Forcing it snaps the key and adds an extraction to the bill. On a frozen lock, lock de-icer or a key warmed in your hand can work; a lighter on the key can crack the cylinder.

What ID do you need?
Something that ties you to the address: a driver's licence, a lease, a bill on your phone, or a neighbour who can vouch with a follow-up later. We photograph nothing and keep nothing. Every serious locksmith checks, and it protects you as much as the next tenant.
