New place, lost keys, or a key you can't get back? Rekeyed today.

Rekeying keeps your lock and changes the key, usually for a fraction of a new lock. Changing the lock replaces the hardware. We tell you which one you need, and we key every door of the house alike so one key does everything. Same day across Greater Montréal.

Before you change anything

If you rent, Québec's Civil Code (article 1934) says neither the tenant nor the landlord may change the locks of a dwelling without the other's consent. In practice, a rekey with a copy handed to the landlord keeps everyone onside; we do it every week and we will not put you in breach. If keys were stolen along with your address (a bag, a wallet), treat the rekey as urgent, not as a chore for next weekend. If someone else changed the lock and your name is on the lease, keep the lease handy and call: we open and rekey in the same visit.

Before you call, and where to stop

Hardware-store rekey kits work on one brand and take patience; a mistake leaves a lock that no key opens. A locksmith rekeys three cylinders in the time it takes to find the kit's instructions online, and keys them alike, which a kit cannot do across brands.

Fair questions

Rekey or replace?

Rekey when the hardware is sound and you only need a new key: that is most cases. Replace when the lock is worn, low-grade, or when you want a deadbolt where there is only a knob. We quote both and you choose.

Can one key open every door?

Yes, when the cylinders are compatible brands, and we carry enough of them to make them compatible. Keying alike is cheaper than most people expect because the labour is the same visit.

What happens to the old keys?

They are yours. We hand them back or cut them up in front of you. Nothing about your keys is recorded anywhere.

I'm a landlord with twelve doors.

That is a master-key conversation: one key for you, one per unit for tenants, and a rekey at each turnover that never touches your master. Ask for the property-manager terms.
